Water Quality Live

Water Quality Live provides near real-time water quality information for bathing waters across the South West, helping river users make informed decisions about whether to use them.

From 2025 to 2030, in-river sensors are being installed and machine learning algorithms are being trained at popular spots across Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset and South Gloucestershire.

They are being used to predict the water quality at these locations all year round and provide near real-time water quality information to river users.

About the alerts

The risks of wild swimming

Wild swimming enthusiasts need to understand the risks before they enter the water.

GOV.UK's 'swim healthy' guidance covers the health risks of wild swimming, how to reduce the risk of getting ill, and what to do if you become unwell.

Check the quality of UK bathing waters

The Environment Agency collects water quality data each year from May to September to ensure that designated bathing waters are safe and clean for swimming and other activities.

They share this information through 'Swimfo', which allows you to look up the details of designated bathing waters by name or location.
